tyvm for the cookie

Not every char can uber, and there's no universal build that can win every uber easily (though a top-end gear Broadsin is the most likely to). Aiming for the ability to clear dest normal gameplay will probably do the trick.

Feel free to add your ideas Madvillain, i'm gonna cookie each new guide added too

Mighty Tankbarb

The Excessive Defender

This build is an excellent barb for people new to MXL, and also a great endgame monster. He can reach over 2 million defence while dedicating most stats to his life, has great leeching abilities, good damage and amazing pdr. All while constantly debuffing and cursing his enemies.

He gets amazing def from both Runemaster and Bear stance, along with great pdr and damage from Bear. Great fhr and a chance to avoid dmg when not walking or running from Immortal. A massive stat boost from Mountain King, and even more life and ias from Ancient Blood. Plus almost all of his benefits come from his skills, so even common gear works with him.

Skills
smax Mountain King, Bear stance, Runemaster and Immortal
1 pt Eagle stance,Thundergod and each of the melee and spirit tree skills
then add to Ancient Blood, every time the max lvls increase add to each maxed skill

or...
smax Mountain King, Bear stance, Runemaster and Immortal
5 pts Wolf Companion
1 pt Eagle Stance, Thundergod and each of the melee skills
then add to Ancient Blood, every time your max levels increase add to each smaxed skill

Stats
Str - enough for gear
the rest - Vit all the way, maybe a little dex for ar if it's lacking (you won't need it for blocking)

Gear
Weapon 1 - Fleshmender SSU War Axe (regen, losim, slow, str and vit, decent 1 hand dmg) or Throatseeker SU Axe (ctc Blood Flash on attack, ias, leech, slow, life, laek)
Armor - Arreat's Heart SU Plate Mail (ctc Bloodlust on attack, +skills, attributes, regen, res, flat lightning dmg) or Scales of the Serpent SU Gothic Plate (ctc Carpet of Spiders on attack, ctc Timestrike on striking, poison dmg, cb, ewd, str, losim, uninterruptible)
Shield - Toraja's Champion SU Gilded Shield (+skills, life, res, los, +4 minions, protector bloodlust enhancement, massive def) or Canis Venator SSU Bronze Shield (+Wolf Companions, +str and vit, massive regen)
Helm - Bul Kathos Voice SU Avenger Guard (ctc Tremor on attack, ias, fhr, cb, str and vit) or Boarfrost SSU Jawbone Cap (50% ctc Icebolt Nova on attack, ias, cold dmg, -100% enemy cold res, +cold spell dmg for the proc, cb, ewd, %str)
Gloves - Centuria Insectorum SSSU Gauntlets (+skills, ias, attributes, tcd, darkling reanimates) or Baron Sludge's Bonecrushers SSU light gauntlets (ias, max dmg, stun, dr, losim, ttad)
Belt - Champion of the Triune SSSU plated belt (+skills, dr, laek, Malic Reanimate, attributes) or a decent vitcrafted belt (quiet shrine) with blessing
Boots - Knight's Grace SSSU greaves (ctc arrow on strike, +skills, ias, dr, attributes, uninterruptible) or Lifecrusher SSU heavy boots (+skills, max dmg, cb, %str, laek) with +1 barb skills. Use vitcrafted boots for a cheaper option.
Rings - Empyrean ring (ctc Singularity on kill, %stats, max life) and Nephalem ring (+skills, %str and vit, tcd).
Ammy - Dyer's Eve (ctc Timestrike on striking, +skills, leech, res all, dr) or Klaatu ammy (ctc Nova Bomb on attack, +skills, ias, lightning dmg, poison dmg, stun).
Weapon 2 - Yaggai's Sagaris SU Labyris (100% ctc Stormblast on attack, ias, str, vit, losim) for phys immunes

While you're lvling and before you gear up you can still get him powerful enough for farming in dest using TU6 uniques (All 3 barb giftbox items from Griswold, Jitan's Kamon, Lionpaws) combined with honorific or crafted gloves and boots and decent rare jewellery.

Socs/Orbs
Soc everything with Ohms, Xars and Lahs for stats and life (These will also enhance your def through Runemaster). Orb with whatever you like, but resists, dr, losim, leech, vit and tcd are useful.

Strategy
Summon Wolf Companion/s and Protector spirits (If you chose them. They're there to bloodlust you, don't worry much about them). Activate Bear stance and Thundergod, and if you use Klaatu ammy and Boarfrost together buff hive.

Use Thunder Slam to stun, SoR as main attack. Keep eagle stance and fort hotkeyed together and cast a fort now and then, switching back to SoR/Bearstance when it casts. Resummon spirits between fights (if you use them). Use alt weapon for phys immunes, set with stormblast skill. Repeat til everything dies

Remember that Bear Stance locks out a lot of skills, so if you play multi be prepared to switch on your 1 pt Snake Stance (for wdm allies) or Eagle Stance (for caster allies) instead of Bear. You'll still be impressively tanky but you'll do much less damage.

Mercs
There are really good options here, since Bear stance doesn't lockout any merc skills. This means they'll get the full benefits of the stance with none of the downsides and can survive where mercs for other builds can't.

Act 1 Priestesses and act 3 Bloodmages can give you ranged support and help heal you. Act 1 Rangers and Act 3 Abjurers have fantastic ranged offence. Act 5 Barb mercs or Act 2 Shapeshifters can increase your dmg and do some extra tanking.

Ubers
Summoning - Depends on the opponents. Kabraxis is impossible (you don't have varied enough dmg), and Purify bosses are extremely hard. But any boss that uses physical dmg, or has minions that do, is pretty easy to beat using the above strategy.
Dungeons - DP and CoV are very tricky, since you need to be close to damage the projectors. The others aren't too difficult using the basic strategy, but dungeons that require constant mobility (like Vizjun) will make your avoid from Immortal useless.
Uberlevels - Most of these are a joke, especially TA, k3k and IotSS. Duncraig is almost impossible though, since your avoid requires you to not move around to work. KoS is very hard, and requires fresh gear focusing on max poison res, poison res and regen. It's possible though. You won't kill fast enough in Bremmtown to beat the timer. Fauzt is possible, but you'll have to move slowly and carefully.
Heroics - Only BPR can be easily beaten with this build, Belial is possible if you're lucky too. Tsin requires a gear check to negate his pierce, but can be beaten... very slowly. I couldn't beat Astro with this guy.

Because SoR debuffs enemies as you attack, adding an extra layer of defences. I experimented with a few skill combinations while making him, including Bloodhatred, but that took too many points away from the tankier skills to make it effective.

SoR is pretty good 1 pted when bearstance is providing such a good damage boost

Well, vitcrafts work well too (quiet shrine crafts), with a weird shrine craft for the weapon (provided it has some leech or losim, or both).

The real strength of this build is it's viability with cheap gear, it won't be as powerful ofc, but it's usable for farming decent gear from dest meph and diablo (or bloodmoor) using incredibly common gear.

All its strengths come from the skill setup, so TUs and honorifics are viable for farming (especially TA, where the arrowsides are no threat). Then you use the farmed gear to trade or upgrade to better gear for ubering.

He does have problems with some ubers like Butcher, because he rarely gets hit with phys attacks. I still have a screenshot of him using a barb merc there, with the entire screen full of warbands Smile

I've used this build as a base in 3 ladders to get my real favourite up and running (ATMGsin using Pirahna, Veil of Magic and 1 pt ww). So he's been tested a lot, also in sp. Very rookie-friendly too.

He's very easy to use with the cheap gear, survives impressive swarms of enemies even without dest charms, and once geared and charmed he's a serious endgame tank.

I'll look into rws and crafted skill potential if you like wow, but it'll be a theorycrafting since i haven't needed to use either with him
