[2012] A Hardcore Players Survival Guide (MXL: Classic)

Post by taem on Tue Oct 16, 2012 7:16 am

First off, this thing has not been updated in AGES! Tell me what to change and I'll change it asap, but if I get no responses like last time I posted this, then I won't update it. I'm not quite the avid player I used to be and don't have time to test all this out anymore. Opinions welcome. Facts greatly appreciated. I also don't know how old that document is. I may have updated the thread and not the document, but I usually try to keep text based backups so it's easy to post the php code if there's ever any problems with the forums (ahem).

A Hardcore Players Survival Guide (MXL)

Hello and welcome to A Hardcore Players Survival Guide for Median XL. In this thread, you will find information regarding what is commonly referred to as, "instant-kills", and tips on how to survive them, as well as tips for handling the more dangerous parts of Median XL. This guide is broken into two parts; Part I detailing Player vs Monster, and Part II detailing Player vs Player. Good luck, and try not to die too often!

Acknowledgments
Big thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread so far! In alphabetic order: Brother Laz, CHUCKNORIS, Lc, Oorsombie, srulz, stardragon12-1-8-27-57-52, and stingray.
A big Special Thanks to: Segolia for helping me finish this long-overdue project!

PART I: PLAYER VS MONSTER
The following is a compiled list of all the most dangerous attacks - including instant-kills - you will encounter when fighting the hordes of Median XL, and tips on how to avoid them.

Barrels
Description: You will see and hear a small fuse (a small patch of fire) burn momentarily as it travels to the barrel. You have a few seconds before the barrels explodes beneath you! The little black haired/orange slain souls throw these barrels from a very long range. The damage from the barrels is 50k physical/magical damage.
Area(s): Duncraig
Tips: Never stop moving! Also, pay close attention to the barrels and where they land. If you cant see them but you can see the black haired souls, hit and run gradually away from the crowd until you see explosions.

Beacon
Description: Beacon is an attack used by Malthael and Imperius from the Judgment Day Uber Summon quest. It unleashes a massive attack that starts with the Starcraft Terran notice "Nuclear Launch detected", then a fiery dot points the "beacon" where the nuke will land. It then releases one nuke within approximately 25 seconds (see MIRV) with a massive flamestrike then finishes off with a radation field; the poison does 3/4 of the damage, while fire does the other 1/4. This damage is very hard to survive, but, so listen for the pre-warning signal and if you keep moving, you will manage to avoid it. The beacon is an attack and cannot be targeted by your attacks. Also, Assassins have this attack as an Uber Skill!
Area(s): Inner Cloister (Summon Quest)
Tips: Keep moving to avoid getting hit!

Cow Stampede
Description: The Bull Prince Rodeo is the Cow King of old, however is spawn point is random in the Cow Level. He uses a special attack called the Cow Stampede which instantly summons a stampede of roaming cows that move from West to East. The problem is that the stampede does not "start" from BPR and move "toward" you; instead, the stampede appears pretty much atop you, killing you instantly! You cannot target the stampede. The stampede attack lasts for approximately 3-5 seconds.
Area(s): Secret Cow Level
Tips: Cow Stampede will nullify upon hitting a solid object, so it is recommended to engage him near a solid wall to avoid his attack, however the explosion from the stampede impact is big enough to reach through the wall, so stand back! Also, many of the walls you cannot walk through are not tall (strong) enough to stop the stampede.

Death Projector
Description: The Death Projector is in an Uber dungeon. Once you enter the projectors detection radius - a screen and a halves distance - the devise instantly shoots out a red ray that starts at the 3:00 position and slowly rotates in a circular motion clockwise. Sometimes, there are two rays when it activates, one at 3:00 and one at 9:00 respectively. The range of the ray is also a screen and a half, so be careful, because it does not stop where the entrance to the room begins, but can extend out into the hallway. If the red ray touches you, you will instantly die!
Area(s): Swampy Pit Level 3 (Flayer Jungle)
Tips: The monsters in this Uber dungeon are immune to your attacks and cannot be killed! The projector never stops moving once activated! As dangerous as this may all sound, so long as you are careful, it's not too difficult. The best thing to do is to first lure as many of the monsters away from the projector as possible, trapping them in the rooms below (use teleport). Once this is accomplished, then carefully approach the projector. If you are unsure if it has been awakened yet, use summons from a safe position to test where the projector currently is, then when you are sure its no longer at a point where you will be struck, move it to destroy it!

Death Spiral
Description: Death Spiral is a blue or purple, slow rotating beam, which moves from your screens right and continues in a circular pattern until it completes a circle. If it hits you, you will instantly die. Three variety of monster use this skill: Dark Star Dragon in Bremmtown (blue), The Death Projector in the Proving Grounds (purple), and the Crystal Orb in the Cathedral of Vanity (blue).
Area(s): Proving Grounds, Bremmtown, and Cathedral of Vanity
Tips: Try to avoid the Death Spiral attack. The dragon in Bremtown uses dark summoning as a skill; the death projector will be indestructible on it's own unless there are creatures near it which will cause it to take damage; the orb emits an immunity shield to monsters.

Death Strike
Description: When you kill either the Countess or one of her special Dark Stalkers minions in the final room with a treasure chest, a bolt of black lightening – called Death Strike – attacks at your current location. Its area of effect is about 1 meter across, or two characters standing side by side. When Death Strike is summoned, first you will see a white billow of cloud on the ground beneath your feet, then within 1-second, black lightening comes down from the sky striking that location. There is a timer between these strikes of 1 second which means if you kill more than one Dark Stalker or the Countess before the timer has finished, more Death Strikes will not fall during this time. Of final note, Death Strike does physical damage however is survivable at higher levels with the right gear.
Area(s): Act 1: Black Marsh (Forgotten Tower: Level 5)
Tips: Dark Stalkers are shaded purple, whereas Assassins are shaded blue – it pays to know the difference on level 5. There are two approaches to taking on this quest: slow and methodical, or fast and furious: The slow approach means taking out one Dark Stalker at a time using standard luring tactics, avoiding the Death Strike when it falls, and repeating. The fast approach means hit as many Dark Stalkers as you can as fast as you can and when you see that lightening, run a screen away. This method is obviously much faster, but also has it obvious risks.

MIRV
Description: MIRV is a series of randomly fired nukes. Basically, this spell spams the "Beacon" spell (see Beacon) with a massively increased radius since it is pretty much a meteor storm version of beacon.
Area(s): Vizjun
Tips: A volley of minions are summoned in rapid succession which can quickly overwhelm you if not dealt with quickly! Purify and kill Uber boss MCS quickly to avoid damage. MIRV says, "Preparing MIRV launch" ~2 seconds before the nuclear warnings!

Molten Fireball Attack
Description: This attack is a large, slow moving fireball which rolls in a straight pattern on the floor for approximately half a screen before stopping; it leaves a trail of fire behind it as it rolls. If you are within a yard of the fireball or in the aftermath of its flame trail, you will take indirect damage which is substantial, but will not kill you outright! However if you get hit directly by the fireball, the fire damage is great and can instantly slay you! The damage from this attack increases with difficulty (i.e. Destruction). In Tran Athula, there are two towers which propagate this attack when you are within half a screen of the tower. In Chaos Sanctuary, there are invisible Regurgitators that shoot these things out at you!
Area(s): Tran Athula (top left corner); Chaos Sanctuary (Invisible Regurgitators)
Tips: In Tran Athula, the Molten Fireballs always roll from West to East and the targetable towers are in the center of the top-left room, however you will not be able to reach them and destroy them before a few Molten Fireballs are deployed! Because of this, the easiest way to avoid death is to use a missile type attack or summons to destroy the towers. In Chaos Sanctuary, the best tip for melee is to just don't stop moving! For missile type attacks, including spell damage, just do what you do best and cast ahead of yourself and you shouldn't get struck!

Punishers
Description: The Punisher is a rotating ninja star which slowly moves outward. There are a three variety of Punisher devices: traps, torrents, and attacks. When a Punisher trap activates, you will see a ring of rotating ninja stars slow moving in a circular pattern outward from the device. A Punisher torrent or attack is a single Punisher ninja star shot at a time! After a screen and a halves length or when hitting a solid object, the Punisher abruptly ends and vanishes - if any of these stars touches you, you drop to one hit point; in the trap variety, you also take damage from the ninja stars, consequently killing you instantly. Additionally, the Uber Boss Malic shoots them.
Area(s): Torrents: Ureh, Khalimgrad; Attacks: Malic in the Isle of the Sunless Sea, Belial in the Icy Cellar of Ancients' Way, and when Imperius/Mathael use Liche Form in Judgment Day quest; And finally any clickable object is a potential Punisher trap.
Tips: Avoid them at all costs! When you hit a clickable object and hear that ominous “clicking” sound indicative of a trap, run away! When the trap is sprung, you have 2-seconds before it activates. Besides, even if it’s not the Punisher Nova Trap, it’s most likely going to hurt!

Rathma's Chosen
Description: This spell augments minions with 50k of magic damage for a short duration! The minion will move twice as fast and glow when under the effects of this spell! Nihlathak's casts this spell on his minions when you engage him!
Area(s): Nihlathak's temple
Tips: Use summons to keep his minions away from you until the effects of Rathma's Chosen wears off.

ShardSpawn
Description: When you kill a ShardSpawn, it will spawn several floating blue symbols from the spot it was slain. These symbols will remain floating in the air, moving slowly in the same direction the shard spawn was facing when it died. After approximately 6-10 seconds, the symbol will fade away and expire! If the run into they symbols before they have fully expired, you will receive a curse (blue crackle above your head) that lasts for about three seconds. If you are caused any physical damage during this time, you will be killed instantly!
Area(s): Act V WorldStone Chamber ( where you kill Baal )
Tips: If you have something that can kill them all at once ( a fairly wide range stormblast, broadside, flamestrike/pyro blast, ect. ) do so, since they show up in waves, at the right, middle, bottom and left of the chamber. You can defeat a wave and simultaneously avoid the symbols since they show up all at once. Baal will constantly summon the Shard Spawn in waves, so kill the Shardspawn, lure Baal into a place where you won't be hit by a symbol ( or teleport past them ) and defeat Baal.

Witch
Description: Witches can appear anywhere in certain areas (see Area(s)), and can usually be heard singing their haunting song up to a screen away, however if they are not activated yet, you may not hear them until your right on top of them! They always let off a mystical purplish, white aura. If you get within half a screen of a witch, you will be Pounced by her after a delay of ~1 second; if you are further than this, she will not pounce you! The witch will always pounce the closest target first, usually taking your mercenary/minions first, however beware her radius: when she pounces, she kills everything around her in a 3-yard radius with "burn" damage! After a pounce, the witch will be inert for a few seconds until her Pounce timer is up (see Tips). The witch cannot be hurt or killed, so do not attempt to kill her!
Area(s): Act 1: Tamoe Highlands, Act 1: Countess Tower (Forgotten Tower: Level 5 in Terror and Destruction), Act 2: Rocky Wastes, Act 5: Frozen Tundra
Tips: Take it slow when walking in the areas mentioned above. When you hear a witch or see her aura, turn the other way or use summons from Mystic Orbs sold at magic vendors to get her out of the way and/or make her inert for the duration of the timer so you can run past. The pounce's timers are 9/7/5 for Hatred/Terror/Hell respectively.

*****!!!AREAS OF CAUTION!!!*****

Astroga's Frozen Orb
Description: Astroga will use this spell at close range. The damage is 50K cold damage. You MIGHT be able to survive ONE hit as a barbarian with enough cold resist/absorb/hp, but still it is best you do not get too close!
Area(s): Act 1 Mausoleum
Tips: Don't get too close to Astroga unless you have Sacred/Unholy Armor.

Energy Beam
Description: Attack from the Dark Star dragon. It is a slow, red orb moving in circular motions towards the target.
Area(s): Ghosts of Old Bremtown in the Pit of Acheron
Tips: Dodge it!

Diablo's Flamestrike
Description: When you engage Diablo in ranged (non-melee) combat, he will fire off a Flamestrike at your location doing a large amount of fire damage! Flamestrike is a pillar of fire which drops from the sky and explodes into a 6-meter radius explosion on the ground!
Area(s): Diablo in Chaos Sanctuary
Tips: Just before the Flamestirke hits, a red circle will appear underneath your feet as warning; use this indicator to move! Melee characters don't need to fear this attack.

Singularity
Description: Creates a massive black hole that deals more damage towards the center of the hole. This can instantly kill you if you are in the direct center. The spell is cast after death by Jitan's guardsmen.
Area(s): Moon of The Spider summon uber and Brother Laz secret boss.
Tips: You can skim around the edges of the hole, just don't go near the center when you can. When fighting against Jitan's guards at melee range, kill them and back off quickly.

Area(s): Duncraig
Tips: Never stop moving! //NEED TO UPDATE

-It creates a small patch of fire that travels to the barrell and will explode when it reaches to it. The little black haired/orange slain souls throw these barrels at a very long range usually.
-It deals either physical/magical damage purely now.
-Pay close attention to the barrells and where they land. If you cant see them but you can see the black haired souls, hit and run gradually away from the crowd until you see explosions.

Beacon
Description: Beacon is an attack used by Malthael and Imperius from the Judgment Day Uber Summon quest. It unleashes a massive attack ( Display? Audio? Missile (speed?) or melee? )made up of two components, poison and fire. Poison does 3/4 of the damage, while fire does the other 1/4. This damage is very hard to survive, but, there will be a pre-warning signal ( what does it look like? ) and if you keep moving, you will manage to avoid it. "It" ( The attack? Or does an actual Beacon form (if so, is it targetable?) ) also only launches one nuke within approximately 25 seconds (see MIRV). Also, Assassins have this attack as an Uber Skill!
Area(s): Inner Cloister (Summon Quest)
Tips: Keep moving to avoid getting hit!

-Starts with a Starcraft Terran notice "Nuclear Launch detected", then a fiery dot points the "beacon" where the nuke will land. It releases with a massive flamestrike then finishes off with a radation field. Takes a very long time to land, the flamestrike is short and the radiation is a moderate duration.
-The notice is the Starcraft Terran notice "Nuclear Launch detected".
-The attack via avoided the targeted area. The beacon cannot be targeted.

MIRV
Description: MIRV is a series of randomly fired nukes. (Radius? Appearance? Damage?)
Area(s): Vizjun
