Question on making videos

Post by Istaryu on Sun May 19, 2013 10:30 pm

Ahoy!
I want to make videos, but 1 thing concernes me. my laptop has an integrated VGA (intel hd 3000), and Diablo is barely running at 25-28 fps.
Should I try using fraps, or it will be a big fail?

OBS (Open Broadcaster Software) is a relatively new recording software that a lot of big streamers are starting to use.
It's pretty good for recording (good performance), and is free. Plus, it's constantly being improved, since it's open source.

If you like playing in windowed mode, it can auto detect the window and it then films only the game window - you can have stuff over that window but it still won't show in the video unless you don't add it trough OBS so it's perfect for live streaming.

Dunno about that graphics card, but the most important thing for recording is actually processor power, not the graphic card. Try fraps and OBS to see which works better.

I use fraps and it works ok, but it lags extremely in games like WoW.

You can look at this to help with recording.

Maybe that will help you get started?

I suggest using windowed mode d2 for recording, I think it lags less, plus you can look at the docs and stuff while playing. another benefit is that everything seems normally sized, unlike full screen on big monitors where it looks pixelated and stretched.

for local recording only (not streaming) you got to choose it first:
settings --> Mode: File Output Only (you can also choose the folder/file where it saves videos)
also
settings --> Video --> Base Resolution --> Custom: 800 x 600
settings --> Video --> fps --> 25 (d2 has 25 fps)

then on the main screen:
right click in the scenes list --> add scene (let's name it Diablo II Window Mode)
select the new scene --> right click in the sources list --> window capture (name it eg. Diablo II Inner Window) --> choose Window: Diablo II, inner window (d2 must be running)

then you can add more stuff to the scene like text/pictures/etc. and click preview stream to see how it looks and then edit scene if you want to add/change things:
ctrl, shift and alt + drag borders/elements for different effects (move, resize), when done, click edit scene again to turn editing off
you can also right click an element in the sources to get more edit options (properties for the specific source settings, then z-order - over/under other elements and xy positioning (center, left right top bottom, scale/size)

then when you're done, you can adjust quality settings in ecoding/video/audio; definitely reduce quality/bitrate and stuff if it lags (you can also try turning aero off/on in windows, it affects the processing speed, atm I don't exactly remember which is better for w-mode)
you can just click start streaming (or the hotkey you chose) and it will start recording (will record the whole diablo2 inner window even if it's covered with something)

if you still have problems, I can record a video of me setting it up

fairly sure it is 25 fps for d2.

dunno about anything at all about video recording or streaming though.

it's pretty easy to set up streaming/recording (in most cases), if anyone ever wants to set it up just ask me
