First of all, there is no set ratio. The game first picks a base item. Then if the item is rolled as unique, it retrieves all possible unique items records based on this base item.

At this point, the game sums up the rarity of all retrieved records and pick which one to drop based on this.

For example, Hangman amulet has something like a rarity of 100, and beads of the snake queen 1. This is what causes Hangman to drop much more often.

That is, there is no set ratio. Items have various rarity values. There is also the luck factor that pops in. One could find 25 bad mood rings while another will keep finding crappy Hangman amulets.

in this case i would indeed name it a set ratio !

If Item of Type A drops and is Unique

theres x% for it being SU // y% being SSU and // z% being SSSU

your explanations are correct but still the ratios are coded in the txt files

There is still the fact it's not a global ratio for all SU sets (which is what I meant when I said there is "no set ratio")

For example the warp blade set could be
SU 100, SSU 25, SSSU 1

While the ancient armor set could be
SU 75, SSU 50, SSSU 10

Not to mention some sets have a secret variation, which just varies things even more.
My reply was mainly replying to OP's post which is clearly implying there is a globally set ratio for SU/SSU/SSSU sets

It would be possible to code it so that this "ratio" exists though, by using same values for all sets. But as far as I remember, it wasn't done this way.

sssu 1 - ssu 4 - su 10

chance = rarity / total_rarity + blizz_unexpectedshit_factor

some items have an independant ratio, specifically jewels, rings, amulets, naginatas, warp blades and others i dun remember

So, that makes it:

SU: ~67%
SSU: ~27%
SSSU: ~7%

Or at least for most of sets. Interesting.
Also there is no "unexpected factor" here. These chances always worked right, they didn't fuck up there

Only thing here is that values under 1 become 1, so that rarity 0 is not possible (although this is no longer true in Sigma)

Your math is wrong, it doesn't add up to 100%
Quick question, what is the ratio for MXL classic?

You're right. No idea wtf I had in mind, for some reason I did the calculation for a total rarity of 24 Eh?
Corrected my post.

How do you tell if the item is SU or SSU or SSU?

You can visit docs to be sure about it. Note that TSW secret items are not listed there.

...new sets are being promoted this patch by lower rarity too King
-got two Barb's new set axes at double MO's before killing Baal Shocked
And yes, I do believe that the character affects drops in a weird way...  Whistling Maps are doing that too... Scratch -certain items are more common for certain classes at certain places... Thinking
