Creating a caster (sorc) runeword weapon

I started out making a sorc staff with Yul r/w according to what I've read (or so I thought at first). The process I was following was:

1. Start with a white Sacred long staff (so it can have 4 sockets - is there a better base item?)
2. Use Oil of Renewal until I get 40-60% ED
3. Use +999 MO. If not double MO-effect, repeat from Step 2.

I was then going to use Oil of Luck then MO ED% 15 times, then socket 3 jewels and then the Yule rune. I can then MO again with whatever I want. But...

I thought hang on. This is a CASTER weapon so does it benefit from ED%? iirc from d2 the caster's damage is purely from skills, so I don't care about ED% - all I need to do is re-roll OoR until the +999 works... and then the rest. The only reason to use OoR is to get a new item that may be "lucky" - I don't need to care about the mods I get from the re-roll.

So I thought I'd check in this forum to see if this is right before I do any more - am I right that all I need is just to get the double-MO effect and I don't need to care about ED% ?

Also - if the above is true, then it seems there's no point in using Oil of Luck - it just gives more ED% which is useless?

You don't need ed on a staff [unless you wanna melee with that staff]

Yep no need for ed or luck really. Luck gives 40% ed and/or 100% ar.

Templar - that's what I thought, weapon ED doesn't transfer to spells. Thanks for confirmation.

Sexen - War Staff sounds a better plan! Thanks also.

Well since this is for a runeword, a T6 is as good as a sacred.

as uncle grim says, its better to use a tier 6 war staff(for less req), and my advice is: Use FCR MO, its better to hit 3-4 times in a second than making 20-30% more spell dmg.
dont forget to reroll the runeword using 3 pgems and an oil of disjunction(if you dont get a good roll, ofc)
