Shoot'em-ups(Touhou etc.)

Post by Stardragon on Fri Dec 07, 2012 7:42 pm

Figure I'd make a thread for this sort of game.

Any other Touhou fans here? I know there's Onemore and iwansquall but I'm kinda interested to see if there are any others.

Also, anyone know of any shmups similar to touhou? I've found a few on steam, but most feel like they're missing something.

Me, but I haven't played it in a while.
I just like the setting and stuff fans make.

Probably they missing on 'hardcore' department compared to touhou.
Touhou best part probably the bullet pattern and music.
Im admit im not a good player myself, but i played quite couple of times.
1cc them is not my forte Sad

I guessed you definitely played jamestown already.
Try this one Bullet Heaven.
Im using that approach for my shump later, because not everyone are 'hardcore' to play it so we need some customization + level progression.
Of course i will make a setting for a hardcore player where you can play unupgraded or you cant rerun old level (similar to 1cc feeling).

There are tons of shump of flash, most of them are quite short (finish within 20 minute)

Bullet heaven is great.
This one is good too.
I played Touhou 6 and 7 several times, and found out that keyboard isn't quite for me, and that my gamepad is quite crappy. But I liked them.

Edit: why the hell this forum doesn't underline URLs? That's common sense for, like, 15 years already.

Haven't actually gotten around to giving Seihou a try.
Have played bullet heaven, beaten all the extra bosses, still gotta get around to getting to wave 80 on survival.
Have also played Jamestown, it's certainly different, beaten all the stages in the normal game(on the lowest difficulty you need for all of them), still haven't unlocked the DLC campaign. Shame I don't know anyone who's into shmups irl to play it with though.

Also on Steam I've found the eXceed series. The first is pretty crap. The second one is pretty good, but I just can't get used to it. The third is pretty good and has some pretty good bosses, although the stages feel pretty same-y.
Also there's the gundemonium series on steam, which is pretty good. The first two are overall pretty good, but I have no idea what I'm doing wrong in the third since I can't even beat the first boss.

I played old game called tyrian made by epic games (company that made jazz jackrabbit, unreal tournament and gear of wars).

For me it quite good concept for 2 players where you can combine your ship and have more powerful shots.
This concept is among thing i feel lacked in modern game (because it mostly designed for one player only).

Two player coop is among my planned design for the shmup/touhou-clone game, although i dunno how to balanced between keyboard and mouse properly (probably speed-change key with shift will help abit).
So imagine if you 'hard-core' player, you playing two character with WSAD and mouse, dodging bullet at same time (you can combine your ship and use mouse to aim shot's angle for easier game play).

I also have some concept about positioning between 2 players.
Just imagine a laser-link between player 1 and player 2 where if you position both character properly, you can deal tons of damage.
So against boss, just stay beside boss to deal damage.
Shorter the distance between player, the more damage it done.
So either you combined or separate, both can deal damage uniquely.

Apparently you can download tyrian 2000, sweeeeeeeet.

But too bad i cant make it work.... yet.
I think might need dosbox, but i hate that program Sad

EDITED:
I forgot you can rebind keys in jamestown.
Can try play 2 player with keyboard and mouse, but dodging bullet is hard Razz

Tyrian isn't quite a bullet-hell. It's just a shmup with upgrades. Bullet hells usually feature 1hkos, small hitboxes, tons of bullets and reward precise dodging. In Tyrian your hitbox is huge, your controls are very elastic, and you can't outmaneuver all the bullets - some will hit anyway - that's why the shield is there.
It's one of my favorite games, anyway, since it's good overall, weapons are quite balanced and it's full of secrets, bosses, fun levels and stuff. Tons of it.

Well, the title about shmup. I posted that just because i think we havent seen 'combined-ship' concept yet. It isnt big though in tyrian, but still interesting.
I totally forgot you can upgrade in that game, but i remembered once you finished the game, there are tons of secret ship (like a carrot).

I just realized that hard-core bullet hell usually chase for score rather than completion. Well for me, i just wish i could 1cc the game easily on normal (yeah im that suck). Been on / off without practicing the game much. It still fun nevertheless.

Found couple from internet:

Yeah, touhou score-runs are ridiculous, even easy mode high-scores would probably be beyond me.

Well, it's hard to make an unbeatable game. But making a ridiculously hard game in which you can compete by the amount of points you receive is one way to ensure replayability and popularity of the game (ex. hardcore Korean Pump it up scoring system vs softcore Dance dance revolution scoring in rhythm games).
Also, it was my fault, I misinterpreted this topic being about bullet-hells by Touhou word in the title.
And since we will be eventually discussing Touhou, how do you guys react to Hisotensouku fans (some hardcore Touhou players dislike them) and to lore fans (I could post a pic where two Touhou fans are displayed: one listens to Silver Forest and IOSYS, holds Alice Margatroid plushie and tells us that Alice is moe, the other one is nervous, sleep-deprivant red-eyed basement-dweller that is obsessed with finishing "Lunatic Extra Phantasm") that didn't actually play the game, but discuss the lore, fan-made content, relationships and even pairings?
