I'll give you a thumbs-up and a continuation:
Space Rangers (IDK if they translated the text quests, but if they did - you really should play this game). Same as above.
Star Control II: The Ur-Quan Masters (or just Ur-Quan Masters). Best game 1992 could offer. Their precursor, and one of my most beloved games ever. Free to play.

As for a secretly good game, you can always try for
1) A Slower Speed Of Light - not a game in a common sense, but a very interesting thing nonetheless. Free to play.
2) The Blind Survivor - You have no eyes, and you are in a zombie horror. Have a good time.
3) Cataclysm the roguelike - This thing has everything (even kitchen sinks). You are a zombie apocalypse survivor in a small town. WARNING: It's a Linux-native ASCII roguelike! But it's quite easy to get started with, and it has so many opportunities of having a good time. Free to play.
4) Unreal World - You are a finn in everyday wild finnish environment. Gather berries, fall trees, build a shelter, build a house, make a fireplace, track an animal, hunt it down, make a roast, eat it, die from a stray arrow in the eye. I don't like it, but lots of people do.
5) Star Wars Galaxies reborn - http://www.swgemu.com/ I didn't play it, but I found it to be a point of interest for people. Probably free to play, since it's an emulator. Possibly even legal.

6) I know, most people don't like it, but I will still recommend Katawa Shoujo. This game left a permanent scar on my heart.
7) Dwarf Fortress. I know you dropped or skipped it at some point. Give it another try! It's very interesting!

4give me iwansquall, but screw templates, they take tons of space and force me to spoil the HFS.

Name : Astral Masters
Genre : Card Game
Other similar game : Hmm, any card game (yugioh, MTG)
Things you interested : All card are unlocked, but you have limited power to control powerful card. Playing more will give you some cards to become free and more Mental Power (power to control card)
Short summary : Build you deck consist of 4 elements (fire, water, air and earth) where which of type have their own strength/weakness. You can dedicated to 1 elements which will give you more life points, or mix and match various card for powerful combo (1 elements = 50 hp, 2 elements = 40 hp, 3 or 4 elements = 30 hp). Battle through multiple league more powerful foe and better rewards.

Name : Disciples II Rise of the Elves
Genre : TBS (Turn Based Strategy)
Similar game : Heroes of Might and Magic Series
Additional info : 5 main races that you can play with (The Mountain Clans , The Legions of the Damned , The Empire , The Elven Alliance and The Undead Hordes) and several neutral races (which are not playable). Each and every one of them has an unique chain of Sagas with a link between some of them (due to the history between the races). If you feel like playing just a single map there are a lot of different maps (quests) to choose from and sites that deliver some custom sagas/quests download.

If you happen to be a fan of HoMM series and you seek something different and as exciting , you will definitely like Disciples II .

-_-;

Name : Osu!
Genre : Rhythm / Music beat
Other similar game : Elite beat agent on NDS
Things you interested : Multiple game-mode (taiko, catch the beat and o2jam), Integrated system for leveling, highscore between game, server and forum (quite awesome tbh)
Short summary : Nothing to say, good game if you like other rhythm game like guitar hero, DDR or beatmania. You can mouse with keyboard and various other peripheral (tablet, touchscreen). Other 3 modes are taiko drum (similar to arcade), catch the beat where you move left / right to catch falling fruit and osu-mania mode where it simulate o2jam (much more similar to guitar hero).

HFS - hidden fun stuff, aka the first feeling you get when you open first two games from my list. Can also refer to various ways of dying or getting some other way to be very surprised (AKA surprise buttsecks). Encountering Punishers or Dunc barrels for the first time is a good example of HFS.

Name : Painkiller/Painkiller:Battle out of Hell/Painkiller:Hell and Damnation(HD)
Genre : oldschool FPS with a shitload of stuff to shoot at
Similar games : old Doom/Quake games,Serious Sam maybe
Short summary : just a simple shooter with lots of enemies, guns and blood. Really fun to play, perfect in its simplicity. Though it may get boring after a longer while,it's great if you want to just shoot some stuff every now and then. Levels are anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes long, also depends if you rush them or check every corner for secret areas and items. The game is pretty much about slaying demons, like D2,but here you can grab a shotgun or a rocket launcher for a change. And some other more interesting weapons, too.
Also: boss fights are epic. HERE is the first boss, from the HD version(same boss as in the original game, except the graphics are better).

Not exactly "hidden gems", but the two games I've discovered this year and that really impressed me were Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Saints Row The Third; Darksiders is pretty cool too. Damn, that TQH bundle was so nice.
