Diablo 2 on windows 8.1

Post by The Big Ouchy on Sat May 09, 2015 12:10 am

Hey guys, long time no post.

I just got a new desktop (cuz my laptop is 7 years old) and was looking to get back into playing ultimative again. Anyone have any experience getting D2 to work on windows 8/8.1.

Windows 8 isn't that bad once you banish the tiles into oblivion btw.

D2 works better on win8 than on 7 surprisingly enough. Mostly because there is no Aero to fuck up the colour scheme.

I have it set up like this:

- Glide wrapper from this forum (game looks like a turd without this in d2d or 3d). I can post my settings if you wish. Currently running the window at a 1280x960 res and it looks and performs great.

- Shortcut to diabloII.exe with "-w -ns -3dfx" in target properties. -ns is very important to ensure you have no fps stuttering in certain zones (those invisible elites in durance being the main offenders) or from procs (hanabigami, sor etc)

- Select shortcut compatibility for WinXP (SP2) and tick run as administrator.

- (Optional) Install aahz' font because it looks sharper on a bigger window/fullscreen and plugy fix if you use it.

- TSW setup works same as always. Some tools like D2stats you have to tell the OS to unblock, because it assumes they are malicious. D2MR only works when "run as an admin" is ticked in the properties of the shortcut.

Just do not install the game in a program files folder to avoid headaches. Do not install any overzealous security software (win defender is just fine if you have decent pc/internet common sense) and you will be fine.

Aero is always on in Win 8. You can't turn it off.
It's been changed though.

Well I managed to get it working on fullscreen mode (which is odd because I had seen that it just wont work that way) but for some reason on windowed mode it moves it down like so:

Certainly odd. Thinking

Edit: Clicked a buncha stuff in the glide setup file, retyped the -w -3dfx stuff a few times, and it seems to be working in windowed mode now... oh well.

Thanks a ton SB.

Just disable UAC instead of running everything as administrator.

Appearantly you cant disable desktop composition on windows 8 anymore, so please dont post it as a problemsolver- unless you feel like trolling.

I am having trouble with d2 not running with windows 8.1 update anymore aswell, it worked like a charm when I had windows 8. I have been trying with multiple reinstalls, graphics changes and I dont get median to run anymore.
My game is installed in a different folder and I shut off DEP for d2se and diablo2, but that didnt solve the error either:

It's a problem with MXL utility, nothing else.
